In this research, the performance of an activated sludge reactor with fixed adhesion medium has been evaluated, the reactor was operated with intermittent aeration for simultaneous removal of total nitrogen and carbonaceous organic matter. The capacity of the aeration tank was 81.2 L, where the adhesion medium occupied less than 1L, however, they were homogeneously distributed in 70% of the useful volume of the reactor. The fixed adhesion medium was composed of polypropylene strands grouped into 40 columns and fixed vertically to a stainless steel support. The reactor was fed with pre-treated domestic wastewater from CITRAR-UNI-FIA and at a constant flow during 24 hours a day. The research covered 6 different scenarios, three of them with an HRT of 8.7 h and the remaining three with an HRT of 11.7 h, in addition the scenarios were operated with intermittent aeration patterns ranging from 40 min of aeration and 140 min of mixing without aeration, to 120 min of aeration and 60 min of mixing without aeration in 3-hour cycles. The parameters that were evaluated were: temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, BOD5, COD, TSS, VSS, TKN, Ammonia-N, nitrites, nitrates and Total-N. The best results, in terms of N-total removal, were obtained with the aeration/non-aeration pattern of 90/90 min, reaching an average efficiency of 81.18% and an average effluent concentration of 12.58 mg/L, and about the removal of carbonaceous organic matter (COD), efficiencies were obtained around 86% and average concentrations in the effluent around 34 mg/L in the scenarios that operated with aeration/non-aeration patterns of 90/90 min and 120 / 60 min. These results indicate that intermittent aeration is a good option to improve the performance of existing reactors in terms of the removal of total nitrogen and carbonaceous organic matter.
