The objective of this thesis is to synthesize by method of combustion in solution. This crystal has interesting optical properties, and constitutes a very promising material as crystall matrix for laser, element for phosphorescense, scintillators, holographic recording media and many other applications. The selected combustion method in solution uses only urea as fuel in one case and a mixture of urea and glycine in another. In the first case a very thick dark brown lumpy substance was obtained; after a heat treatment of up to 700 ◦C for three hours, the result was a white spongy powder, which, according to X-ray diffraction analysis, turned out to be constituted by a pure phase of YAlO3. In the second case, a white spongy powder was obtained directly; The X-ray diffractogram by the powder method confirmed the obtaining of pure phase of YAlO3. Naturally, the second case has the advantage of directly obtaining the expected result without the need for heat treatment. The data obtained from the X ray diffraction spectrum (XRD) was used to perform a Rietveld refinement of the spectrum obtained. The structural parameters obtained, as well as the fractional atomic positions, show excellent correspondence with literature associated with the distorted orthorhombic structure of perovskite. On the other hand, the morphological characterization of the sample using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and its structural characterization by X-ray diffraction of YAlO3 doped with the Cr3+ is also presented.
