In situ analysis of chemical processes track efficiently the product quality, pollutants emissions and productivity. Therefore, analysis in real time ensure the product optimization and a sustainable process. Gases or vapors released by factories are usually analyzed using physicochemical methods or instruments, but, they require long time analysis, qualified employments and expensive instruments. Gas sensors are an affordable alternative to the current problem due to its characteristics such as portability, rapid response time, high sensitivity and low cost. Sensors based on Ag/α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the coprecipitation method for ethanol analysis at room temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns of samples matched perfectly with characteristic peaks of hematite with no peaks assigned to Ag even at the highest concentration. STEM images and EDX analysis revealed the presence of Ag nanoparticles (from 2 to 5 nm) which were highly dispersed onto α-Fe2O3 surface with an Ag/Fe mass ratio from 0.014 to 0.099. Sensing tests of Ag/α-Fe2O3 3% (wt) showed much higher response signal with linear correlation from 2 to 35 ppm. The sensor also depicted a good selectivity, up to 4 times higher and stability during 4 days with recovery and response time equal to 15 s and 25 s, respectively. The high dispersion of reduced Ag evaluated by XPS analysis played an important physical and chemical role in the sensing mechanism because improved conductivity of hematite.
