The present investigation analyzes how the placement of an extended upstream filter system influences in the physical stability of an existing tailings storage. The physical stability was carried out in the downstream slope and the condition considered for the dam was during the operation. The stability indicator analyzed was the safety factor. The layer of free-draining material used as a filter and placed horizontally is called the filter system and it is extended upstream of the dam. This layer is placed along the body of the dam and extends upstream, below the stored tailings. The analysis carried out initially consisted in the comparison between the value of the safety factor obtained when the existing dam does not have the filter system and when it has the filter system. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to evaluate how the length of the upstream filter and the height of the dam influence in the safety factor, the sensitivity analysis considered 30 simulations. From the investigation carried out, it can be concluded that the use of the filter system increases the value of the safety factor of the existing dam by 43.7%. Additionally, the conclusion from the sensitivity analysis is that the safety factor is independent of the length upstream of the filter system, but it depends on the height of the dam. For the sensitivity analysis carried out, the downstream construction method was used. The numerical model of the dam was calibrated by verifying the flow outlet elevation obtained from the infiltration analysis with the real elevation.
