The present investigation was carried out with the objective of evaluating the capacity of organic matter of the in horizontal subsurface flow artificial wetlands, comparing the efficiency of two artificial wetlands with different dimensions: surface area and height, but both with the same useful volume and installed. in parallel, treating each one of these, a flow rate of 1.5ml / s, and using corrugated PVC tubes as a support medium, in which the macrophyte Scirpus Californicus, or commonly known as the Totora, was planted and developed. The effluent for the proposed treatment system was the wastewater from the pretreatment at the Research Center of Domestic Residual Waters and Dangerous Residues of the National University of Engineering (CITRAR - UNI), which treats the waters Domestic residuals from the urban authorizations “El Ángel” and “El Milagro”, and in whose facilities the investigation was also developed. The hypothesis of this research was that the horizontal flow subsurface artificial wetland with the highest surface area would have an efficiency greater than 10% in the removal of organic matter, in relation to the artificial wetland with the smallest surface area. However, the investigation determined that the hypothesis was not fulfilled, because of the 2 parameters used for its determination: BOD5 and COD, only the efficiency in the removal of BOD5 in the artificial wetland with the largest surface area was higher in 14.41%; while, in the efficiency of COD removal, the artificial wetland with the highest surface area obtained a higher efficiency of 5.82%. In addition to BOD5 and COD, other parameters were also investigated, for which it was determined that of all the parameters investigated, the effluent from both artificial wetlands complied with the maximum permissible limits (LMP) for the effluents of Water Treatment Plants. Domestic or Municipal Residuals (WWTP), approved by Supreme Decree N°. 003-2010-MINAM, however, since thermotolerant coliforms were not determined, it could not be concluded that it was met in all the parameters.
