This topic of research arises with the aim of determining an aceptable concentration of chlorides in tannery effluents, in order to this element doesn’t alter the normal development of organisms when in contact with a body of wáter and set a minimum level of treatment before of its disposal. The research consisted of developing toxicity bioassays with lettuce sedes (Lactuca sativa) at different concentrations of the effluent composed of the Pre-Soaking and Soaking stages, where the salts that were used as a method for the preservation of skins are removed before starting the tanning process. First, having several types of lettuce seeds, they were evaluated according to criteria established in the research methodology, to determine which will validate the toxicity test. Subsequently, samples of Pre Soaking and Soaking of the tanning processes of the CITEccal and tanneries of Metropolitan Lima were collected to carry out the toxicity bioassays with the chosen species, subjecting it to controlled and adequate conditions for normal growth and different concentrations of the soaking effluent to assess its effects on growth and thereby calculate the Medium Inhibition Concentration (IC50). In addition, toxicity tests were carried out with a synthetic sample of sodium chloride (NaCl), prepared in the laboratory, at different concentrations to establish a comparison with the results of toxicity tests of the raw effluent, because in the soaking effluent not only chlorides are eliminated but also other compounds, that can add or subtract the effect of chlorides. Based on the results of the sensitivity test with ZnSO4, the lettuce seed that validates the toxicity test was determined to be the light green long romaine lettuce; subsequently, from the toxicity tests with the lettuce seed chosen, results were obtained that sometimes went to statistical tests for validation and based on the calculated Medium Inhibition Concentrations, the admissible concentration of chlorides in tannery effluents was determined to be 582.30 mg/L with a mínimum value of 258.45 mg/L and a maximum of 906.15 mg/L., which is proposed in this research thesis as a guide regulatory value for the adaptation of the environmental regulations corresponding to this sector, which must be endorsed with the analysis of a greater number of test species and samples of tannery effluents. It is concluded based on the results that chlorides have a more toxic effect if they are discharged into the environment as part of the soaking effluent than in its pure state, which is why the reduction in the source of the chloride levels should be one of the priorities in the industry, which can be achieved by applying the concept of Cleaner Production focused on minimization and reuse, being the last alternative to treat the effluent at the end of the process.
