Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a new member of the family of carbonaceous materials that have aroused great interest because of their properties and applications in different fields, such as sensors, catalysis, medicine, and others. Although the size, morphology, doping, and functional groups present in their structure provoke variations in their properties, there is no clear distinction within the literature between GQDs and their derivatives containing oxygenated functional groups. Some authors call the later graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs), which obtain their characteristic structure due to the used synthesis methodology. This tesis focuses on combining computacional and experimental methods for studying electrochemically GOQDs, their behavior in solvents of different natures, and the effect of their incorporating in TiO2 based composites used for photochemical applications. This work begins by studying the synthesis of GQDs by an electrochemical “carbonization” method. The results of UV-vis and FT-IR spectroscopy analyses showed that the degree of oxidation of the GOQDs is influenced by the type of solvent and electrolyte, the pH, the applied potential, and the alcohol/water ratio. Based on these results, a rationalized GOQD formation mechanism is proposed through a theoretical study based on the density functional theory (DFT). These results allowed the development of a method of synthesis of GOQDs from 96% ethanol (commercial). A combination of experimental and computational methods using molecular dynamics (MD) was later used to study the behavior of GOQDs in solvents of different nature and which is related to their optical behavior. The results show that the order in the final degree of aggregation of the GOQDs in these solvents is as follows: water > hexane > acetone > chloroform > toluene ≈ ethanol. Finally, computational methods and experimental tests were used to study the mechanism of the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 and GOQDs. The results show that (1) the inclusion of oxygenated groups in the structure of the GQDs, makes these in p-type semiconductors, and (2) the GOQDs form a type II heterojunction with TiO2 so that it could be used in photocatalytic applications. These results are compatible with those observed experimentally from their UV-Vis spectra and photo-electrochemical tests.
