This research work proposes an alternative to improve energy and operationally a primary distillation unit for oil refining through the implementation of a preflash system, in order to evaluate the possibility of reducing the costs associated with fuel consumption and eliminating operational restrictions to increase processing capacity. The methodology used in the development of this work consisted in the collection of data of the main operating parameters such as flows, temperature and pressure, obtained mainly from the control instruments located both in the field and in the control room, as well as the collection of the parameters of composition of the food and the certificate of quality of products, in order to perform the modeling of the primary distillation unit by using the Aspen Hysys process simulator. The information obtained allowed us to characterize the mixture of crude oil fed, build the simulation model and validate the results obtained, which serves as a starting point for the analysis of the performance of existing equipment and the evaluation of the proposed configuration with the preflash system. The incorporation of the preflash system in the current refining scheme of the primary distillation unit, allows to demonstrate that it is possible to improve the process energetically, reducing the fuel consumption in the furnace by 11.8% (10.5 barrels per day of fuel oil), which represents an annual saving of US $ 222,285.00. Likewise, when evaluating the operational restrictions for the increase of the processing capacity of the primary distillation unit, it is identified that the furnace is the main bottleneck of the process and that the addition of the preflash system hydraulically decongests by sending the vapors directly to the column, allowing to increase the operational load of processing by 14.3%.
