The research was designed to evaluate, on a scale of laboratory, the behaviour of four Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBRs) to the removal of organic loadings, using four percents of filling in the MBBRs (5%, 10%, 20% and 40%) with corrugated tubes of PVC as alternative moving beds, which were selected because of having qualities like being light, tough, of good capacity of attachment (specific surface area of 267.112 m2/m3) and being cheap. The experimental part was developed in Lima. It was implemented two MBBRs of 84L and their secondary sedimentation tanks of 32.5L, each one and parallel working. It was divided in three stages with a whole duration of 56 weeks. The stage of preparation (13 weeks) performed the activities of implementation of system and the beginning tests, while in the stage N°01 (24 weeks) and in the stage N°02 (19 weeks) were researched the MBBRs with filling percents of 5%-10% and 20%-40% respectively and were developed the main tests of the research. The influent to the system was pre-treated domestic wastewater, the operative flow was 216 L/d and the main parameters evaluated were BOD5, COD, TSS, VSS, FSS, nutrients, attached solids, turbidity, pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen. In the stage N°01, it was worked under an average Organic Volumetric Loading (OVL) of 0.34 ± 0.06 kgBOD5/m3·d and average Organic Surfacing Loadings (OSL) of 25.59 ± 4.53 and 12.80 ± 2.26 gDBO5/m2·d in the MBBRs with filling percents of 5% y 10% and achieved average removal efficiencies of 86 ± 5% and 84 ± 7% respectively; and in the stage N°02, it was worked under an average OVL of 0.41 ± 0.05 kgDBO5/m3·d and average OSLs of 7.71 ± 0.93 and 3.85 ± 0.46 gDBO5/m2·d in the MBBRs with filling percents of 20% y 40% and achieved average removal efficiencies of 86 ± 12% and 88 ± 10% respectively. It was noticed the good capacity of attachment on the carriers with rates of Attached biomass growth until 29.55 gTSS/m2. It was concluded that in the design of MBBRs, the optimum fraction of filling to the carriers is variable and a dependent consequence of the OVL and OSL to be applied.
