Knowledge of hydrological processes and climate changes occurring on the sub-basin of the river Jequetepeque is located on the north coast of Peru and covers the departments of Cajamarca and La Libertad, allow you to set your level of involvement, behavior and predict tendencies. This information will allow the planning processes and decision making in the short, medium and long term. In recent years, the hydrological models have been increasingly used to understand and manage natural and human activities that affect the watershed systems. These hydrological models may contain parameters that cannot be measured directly because of the limitations for their measurement In this study the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) program was used in the Jequetepeque river basin to quantify all the variables of water balance of water flow in soil (water production, soil water and deep aquifer recharge) and water in vegetation (current and potential evapotranspiration) for a daily period of 14 years (1997-2010). The model was calibrated and validated by comparing with existing data flow; this methodology basically consisted of: a) Calibration of the model to achieve a satisfactory fit between measured and simulated data, using a sensitivity analysis on the model parameters, a calibration period of 9 years of observation (1997-2005): b) Validation of the model, to assess the predictive capability by comparing the measured and simulated data for a period of 5 years of observation (2006-2010). The capacity of the SWAT model to predict the flow and sediment simulated with respect to data recorded in the station Yonan was analyzed using statistical coefficients such as: the coefficient of determination (R2), with surface runoff results for the calibration period of 0.82 and 0.90 daily and monthly Nash Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) level which was 0.74 on a daily level and monthly level. Likewise, sediment transport for the coefficient of determination (R2) for the validation period was 0.42 and 0.73 daily and monthly level and a Nash Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) which was between -0.65 a daily level and 0.58 monthly level. From the above it is concluded that the SWAT model is a valuable tool for simulating the impact of management of soil and vegetation in the production of water and sediments in the Jequetepeque river basin, which experiences a high variation in soil, land use, slope, and climate conditions. The study provides a strong base for future studies concerning water, food, security, and management strategies for water resources in the provinces within the Jequetepeque river basin.
