In the present research a study an effluent treatment of an advanced septic tank was studied, which treats domestic sewage as a component of the CITRAR - UNI. For this, a system consisting of three columns in series of submerged biological filters upstream with support medium pieces of corrugated polyethylene pipe was implemented. Each column was built with a circular section of 10” (0.25 m) in diameter with a height of support material equal to 39.37” (1.0 m) and a total height of 59.06” (1.50 m). The support material was made up of 1” (2.5 cm) pieces of 3/4“ (1.905cm) diameter corrugated polyethylene tubing. In addition, the selected work flow was 1.2 ml/s and a hydraulic retention time of 10 hours. The system was operated for 35 weeks, the first 16 weeks served to start the system and the next 19 weeks correspond to the evaluation period of the reactor. Where the following average values were obtained at the exit of the system: 8.73 ± 1.17 NTU of turbidity, 5.06 ± 2.03 mg/l of suspended solids, 36.30 ± 7.16 mg/l of BOD5 and 76.06 ± 11.5 mg/l of COD. Likewise, the following removal efficiencies were obtained: 83.78 ± 5.89% in turbidity, 82.86 ± 7.35% in suspended solids, 55.94 ± 7.13% in BOD5 and 59.23 ± 6.00% in COD.
