At the beginning of the 1980s, through a series of articles on architectural criticism, the discussion about postmodemism began in Peru by architects who began their professional activity in the 70s, which made a critique offunctionalism, a trend within which they were academically trained. Simultaneously, a series of works under the formal or conceptual influence ofpostmodemism was carried out in Lima, under the influence oftwo tendencies: the populist-eclectic ofthe United States and the historical-contextualist ofEurope. Despite the various manifestations ofpostmodemism in local architecture, the influence of this movement on the work carried out is not recognized through the 1980-2000 period. On one hand, recent historiography ignores the contribution of this movement. On the other hand, several ofthe designers deny their belonging to this movement on the work carried out during the study period. We believe that ifthere was formal and theoretical influence of this movement in which has not been collected in ali its magnitude, then there is a problem ofidentity in this period that shapes the problematic ofpostmodemism in Lima. We have found two differentiated groups according to generational characteristics that ventured into postmodemism: on one hand, architects formed before 1980 under the optics of functionalism, which we call "converts"; and on the other, architects who were trained afterwards, within the precepts of typology and metaphor as pedagogical tools, whom we call "believers". Our main hypothesis is that the postmodemist theory generated a crisis of generational identity when entering into conflict with the modemist ideology. This mainly affected the "converted" designers, whose architecture was characterized by explicit historical reference. The "believing" designers, on the other hand, had no identity problems and their architecture was characterized by a double codification.
