Nowadays, Natural gas represents the main energy matrix in Perú, therefore natural gas transport systems ‘maintenance is a key factor for integrity preservation prior to continuity operation, efficiency, safety and social responsibility. Maintenance plans applicable to transport system include preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance which usually includes depressurization pipelines and flowlines since high pressure to atmospherics pressures in order to work safely. We can also include maneuvers for new connections like tie ins and its pressurize it. While depressurized natural gas is expulsed to atmosphere suffer a huge expansion due to lowered pressure, this phenomenon can also present when gas flow for a valve with leak problems, as a consequence gas suffer a drop temperature, and this is what is known as Joule Thompson effect. This effect generates a drop temperature that could be harmful if it is not properly manage, the present work has the goal to describe the Joule Thompson effect and the effects that could produce in pipeline transport system.
