The development of the Lima’s Metro network system will need the use of tunneling methods such as Conventional and Mechanized excavation using TBM. There are new challenges to face as the network grows, for instance in the line 3 the shallow tunnel will cross soft ground, mixed heading on cohesive and cohesionless soils under groundwater table. This thesis addresses the main challenges the Lima line 3 tunnel construction will face by reviewing practical experience in tunneling in several countries with similar ground conditions and academic validated research that allows to forecast the tunnel induced settlements and its range of influence, enabling to provide adequate measures that guarantees a successful tunnel excavation. The focus is on the use of numerical methods to forecast the trend of ground settlement according to the existing ground conditions induced by tunneling excavation and to recommend the construction methods and related measures that should be performed to avoid damage to people, overlying buildings, and services due to the tunnel construction.
