This research is regarding the behavior of the UASB in domestic wastewater treatment reactor with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 hours with height of sludge blanked between 45 cm to 55 cm which is equivalent to 34% to 41% of the useful volume of the reactor. The study was carried out in the city of Lima, considered a subtropical zone. The system consisted on two identical 25-liter laboratory-scale UASB reactors which were fed with domestic wastewater from the pre-treatment of the Wastewater Treatment and Hazardous Waste Research Center of the School of Environmental Engineering of the National University of Engineering. Subsequently, the evaluation period was divided into three stages, according to the variation of environmental temperature. During this period, for the evaluation of the behavior of the UASB reactors, different parameters were measured to determine the efficiency of the treatment, the operational stability and the quantity and quality of the sludge of the UASB reactors. The principal parameters that were monitored and analyzed during this research to determine the efficiency of the treatment and the stability of operation were: wastewater temperature, pH, alkalinity, turbidity, conductivity, total and soluble COD, settleable solids and production of methane gas On the other hand, to know the behavior and production of sludge in UASB reactors, it was measured the height of sludge, daily growth rates and expansion of the sludge blanket. Likewise, to know the physical-chemical and biological characteristics in sludge, parameters like Specific Metanogenic Activity, Biodegradability of Anaerobic Sludge, total and volatile solids in sludge, sedimentation rate, pH, viscosity, density and granule size of the sludge were measured. Finally, it was concluded the relationship between the operational variables, environmental conditions and the quality of the affluent of reactors. Their evaluation and reporting would help to predict the behavior of the reactor to improve its efficiency and operation over time and also the design of future infrastructure for the treatment of this type of technology.
