The objective of the investigation was to evalúate the efficiency of the vermifilter using Eisenia fetida species in the removal of nutrients in the affluent from CITRAR FIA-UNI during the months of November of 2016 to August of 2017. The study comprised three stages. The first is the adaptation of the earthworm Eisenia foetida to wastewater and sawdust as a filtering medium; the second stage of starting the system allowed the formation of the biofilm. Finally, the third stage of monitoring the physicochemical parameters: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (NT), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2“), total phosphorus (FT) and total suspended solids (TSS) for three flows. For the flow rate of 232 ml/min: the removal of BOD5 was 84.25%, the removal of COD was 57.32%, the removal of NT was 33.72%, the removal of NH4+ was 49.70%, the removal of NO3- was 25.01%, the increase of NO2- was 12.39%, the removal of FT was 43.18% and the removal of SST was 95.15%. For the flow rate of 170 ml/min, the removal of BOD5 was 97.32%, the removal of COD was 81.25%, the removal of NT was 69.80%, the removal of NH4+ was 88.91%, the removal of NO3- was 44.24%, the increase of NO2- was 69.09%, the removal of FT was 61.97% and the removal of SST was 96.95%. Finally, for the flow rate of 100 ml/min the removal of BOD5 was 95.32%, the removal of the COD was 71.04%, the removal of NT was 77.60%, the removal of NH4+ was 90.86%, the removal of NO3- was 77.60%, the increase of NO2- was 101.82%, the removal of FT was 70.09% and the removal of SST was 98.43%. It is concluded that the lombrifiltro can be considered as a technological alternative for secondary treatment.
