The aim of this thesis is to define a simple and effective method for sizing viscous dampers, in order to improve the seismic behaviour of buildings . It is expected that, because of its ease of use, this procedure will be useful for the practical engineer. Furthermore, its use may be extended forthe seismic rehabilitation of structures. In the first part of the thesis other proposals for sizing dampers are reviewed, in particular the work of Silvestri et al., and the analytical basis for the procedure proposed in the thesis is presented. The numerical work in the thesis starts with the study of the response of several simple models with sinusoidal base accelerations at different frequencies, with amplitudes consistent with those of a severe earthquake. Then, the same structures are analyzed considering earthquake records modified to match the pseudo-acceleration spectrum of the Peruvian E.030 standard. Finally, a study of the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to a real buildingunder ground accelerations from real earthquakes, comparing the results of this building without dampers, with the method of Silvestri et al., and with dampers sized as is proposed in the thesis. It is concluded that by sizing the dampers as proposed in the thesis the results are similar or better than those of Silvestri et al., but with a distribution of the viscous fluid dampers in line with the dynamic characteristics of the structures, and with less added damping.
