In this paper a method of pattern recognition based on digital image processing and neural networks oriented to automatic registration of academic assessments is developed. The system consists of a hardware stage and a software stage. The hardware stage consists of an enclosure containing the assessment booklets to register. Said chamber contains a feed tray where the assessment booklets are placed. The enclosure has an adequate lighting provided with high brightness LEDs (Light - Emitting Diode). Once the image has been obtained, the booklet is removed from the bin onto an output tray. The software stage initially acquires the image of an assessment booklet, positioned in the compartment enclosure, via a webcam. Then, three areas of interest that the user has initially configured are identified in the booklet, these are: the student's code, expressed in marks, the student's grade, expressed in numbers, and the student's grade, expressed in marks. By using image processing algorithms, these areas of interest are filtered, thresholded, segmented and parameterized. Then using neural network algorithms is carried out the recognition of the student's code and the student's grade, expressed in marks. Likewise, the student's grade in handwritten numbers is recognized. The proposed system answers to the need to increase the efficiency of the grades registration process in the academic coordination department of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the University of San Martin de Porres.
