The present thesis develops the application of a new method of geomechanical characterization that focuses on the foundations of civil and mining works and is the Basic Quality Index BQ method. The BQ method was applied in geotechnical investigations carried out for tailings dam growth of the Toromocho Mining Unit, a comparison is being made with the method of geomechanical characterization called RMR. Investigations were carried out on the left stirrup (P-01), valley of the dam (P-02) and right stirrup (P-03). The lithology of the project is predominantly limestone, with structural features of folds and a zone of inverse faulting. Chapter I explains the generalities of the Thesis, Chapter II covers the theoretical framework, Chapter III develop the geology of the project. Later in Chapter IV the methodology of work is developed, how the geomechanical classifications (RMR and BQ) were realized, and how they vary in depth. In Chapter V, the graphs of parameter variability (Resistance, RQD, Jv) are compared with the BQ index. Finally, it is concluded that the BQ Basic Quality Index method is more efficient and practical than the RMR geomechanical characterization method in foundation, due to the practicality of the classification parameters, therefore, it unifies the variability of the characterization of the solid mass in depth; In addition their results directly indicate data of bearing capacity of the rocks according to the quality of the rock mass.
