This study is focused on the numerical modeling of the behavior of sands in the triaxial monotonic test through the three-dimensional effective stress plasticity model modified UBCSAND and implemented in the TNO DIANA computer code. The UBCSAND is a sophisticated model that can be used in both practical engineering and research. The above has been verified in this work through a process of verification and validation of its implementation in TNO Diana carried out in the fifth chapter. The parameters of the model can be calculated from data measured directly from triaxial tests of sands by standard procedures and known by the geotechnical community. For this purpose, in this work a methodology has been developed for obtaining each one of the model parameters based on different publications in the literature, as well as based on the ideas proposed by the author, as described in the fourth chapter. This is an advantage compared to other models for similar purposes, whose input parameters are more tedious to calculate and generally require different types of tests generating a higher cost. Another advantage of this model is that it is implemented in other computer programs oriented to geomaterials such as FLAC, PLAXIS and Midas GTS which have been verified and validated in different works, as reported in the literature. The shear strength of the sand under study is reproduced for monotonic loading paths that cause material failure such as static liquefaction. This behavior of the low relative density sands has been predicted accurately by the model and the results of the calibration process show a good agreement with the experimental data. The comparison between the experimental observations and the calibrated models in terms of stresses, strains, pore pressures and effective stress paths, are presented in the sixth chapter.
