The objective of the present work is to design and construct a thermal conductivity measuring equipment (EMCT), specifically for use in insulation materials. The primary or absolute method called the hot plate guard (AGPC), recommended according to standard ASTM C177, is used for this purpose. In addition, a data acquisition and control software (SCADA) was developed that allows automatic temperature collection and stability through the PID control (PLC), which is indispensable for the calculation of the variable of interest (thermal conductivity). After the equipment was finished, tests were carried out to determine the conductivity of the expanded polystyrene to verify that the value is within the commercially accepted range. During the trials to characterize the expanded polystyrene, a thermal conductivity of 0,053W/mK was obtained, for an average operating temperature of 23°C.
