This thesis is about a proposal to numerical modeling of dam break of an earth dam of containment of conventional tailings. Part of the found problems is that the majority of the numerical models to dam break are based in formulations to water dam break, which still generates uncertainty of results when we simulate a tailings dam break. According to the utilized bibliography, it was possible to know statistics both in water dam break events as well as tailings dam break events. Furthermore, it was possible to identify sorne historie cases of dam breaks in Peru, which do not have engineering details that help to understand the causes which triggered the dam breaks, but they help to see that the dam breaks have never been rare in our counlry. The study of historie cases was the starting point to stablish differences between water dam breaks and tailings dam breaks. Besides, the thesis mentions numerical models that can be used to dam break studies both of water dams and tailings dams, mentioning just sorne of them and emphasizing the more applied models. The principal contribution of the thesis is the estimation of the released volume which would happen in an eventual case of tailing dam break, based in a proposed volumetric balance. From this estimation, it is known the volume that we have to simulate for the dam break event.
