The research aims to study the structural conditions of self-constructed housing in the sectors 7, 9 and 10 of Villa El Salvador in Lima; theoretical and laboratory studies were included in the research, with the purpose of know the level of self-construction in the zone. In order to collect information of the structural conditions of the housing in the zone, a survey file was developed; it was applied for 30 houses. Subsequently, a report file was developed to process the collected information, which shows, among others: data, location and structural problems, quality of workforce and materials problems, and photos of the house. On the other hand, tests were performed on drilled cores of concrete structural elements of 10 houses, including compressive strength and carbonation of concrete; analysis of sulphates, chlorides and salts of concrete; and steel reinforcement detection. In addition, tests were performed on units, prisms and assemblages of masonry, including determination of void ratio and compressive strength of masonry units; axial compressive strength of masonry prisms and diagonal compression strength of masonry assemblages. Moreover, tests were performed on samples of sand from the zone. Finally, the structural characterization of housing was done. The results show inappropriate structural conditions of informal housing in Villa El Salvador; besides, they allow us to know more fully the conditions of housing of informal masonry, and the research will serve as initiative for the development of new research studies anywhere of the country.
