This study aims at analyzing the meteorological and climate conditions in the airshed over Chimbote, the mesoscale and local meteorology, to determine its influence on air quality, together with the urban environmental systems, constituted by the urban structure of the city, the population, the industry and transportation. When analyzing the climate behavior of the maximum and minimum temperature and winds in the airshed, potential weather conditions that will influence the concentration levels of particulated matter PM10 are determined. The values of the meteorological parameters are more limiting in July than in February. The mesoscale meteorology was elaborated using meteorological models, determining the intensity and thickness of the inversion layer, the atmospheric stability and the circulation patterns by levels in the vertical structure from 1000mb to 750MB, observing that the temperature difference between February and July, at all levels, is higher in February. In the circulation flows between 950 mb to 850 mb in July, opposite direction flows (low) occur, that will have great influence on the transportation and dispersion of pollutants. Similarly, when cutting the latitudinal vertical structure over the city of Chimbote, the circulation of mesoscale-breeze and the different characteristics of air mass over the city can be seen. it is complemented using a vertical sounding of the city, appreciating the mixing layer, inversion hours and vertical speed. At local level, for the years 2005 and 2006, the low magnitude of surface winds speed is associated with this inversion conditions and stable atmosphere, mainly during day and night periods in autumn and winter. The steel and industry with high emissions, unplanned land use and transportation, have generated a heat island over the urban structure that does not favors aeration of the city. The concentration levels of PM10 during June exceed the standards. With the transport and air dispersion model, scenarios have been generated, considering the meteorology of atmospheric pollutants. The capacity of assimilation or dilution of pollutants in the winter and autumn is poor, while in summer, contaminated surface is larger. Keywords: mixed layer, atmospheric vent, air pollution.
