The present thesis was elaborated in a medium metal mechanical business which is dedicated to manufacture metal products, aluminium products, plastic products and products made from melamine or formica. The production is made to order and each client order presents variety of products in types and quantities. Due to the production, system behaves in a little flexible way and due to planning production weaknesses, the business has a high delay rate and numerous client complaints. On one hand, clients claim because of delay on due dates; on the other hand, they consider that lead-time for orders is too long. Besides, because of different wastes in the floor production, productivity is affected in a negative way. With the purpose of giving the production system more flexibility and utilizing the previous investments made in enabling, it was chosen to utilize Lean Manufacturing tools supported by the positive experience of 5S application in pilot sections. The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) was utilized as a diagnosis tool and, since it, were detected improvement opportunities, being one of them the application of SMED. In a pilot section: the folding area, it was realized the application of SMED with the purpose of reducing daily set-up times, reaching a reduction of 49% of non-working machine time. With more available time to produce, productivity increases. KEY WORDS: Lead time, waste, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, SMED, set-up.
