The Iron Ore Mining in Peru has been developing increasingly in the last 8 years due to growing external demand having to China, as the largest consumer, this has led to the expansion of transnational mining companies, on the other hand the increase domestic demand for iron ore have enabled the development of small mining companies such as Minera Alta Sierra SAC, who operates the mining Project the Fierrazo, at a monthly rate of 4,000 tons. Since Minera Alta Sierra presented problems about rejected lots for noncompliance the grade of the total Fe, also the effect for the falling of international iron ore price in August 2014 was in 82.27 USD/TON and now is in 52.74 USD/TON, so they had to take strategic actions to stay in the market. Iron Ore domestic market and the international context was evaluated, also the conditions of existing producers and projects, there are five factors that affect competitiveness: Costs, Quality, Productivity, Market and Innovation, then general strategies whose results were established below: a) The iron ore mining in Peru might be internationally competitive; whose main strengths are theirs resources estimated in 7.3 billion of tons with an average grade of 52.6% Fe total. Marcona Mine is the most competitive by its resources in 2.0 billion of tons, proximity to port and low operating costs. We also have interesting projects but now they are paralyzed, such as those located in Apurimac and Cusco with resources of 3.1 billion tons, so the Government and the Private Sector should promote initially the development of infrastructure (roads, railways) also iron ore add value that allow them to be viable. b) The strategies addressed to reduce the production costs, benefits and transportation, the increase of production volumes, partnerships, are the most important aspects for maintaining competitiveness. Also it developed an application case of Minera Alta Sierra through analysis of quality costs and production costs, which were implemented process controls. The results obtained were: a) Applying process controls have achieved to reduce production costs in 26% obtaining an operating cost from 93.47 USD/TON to 69.44 USD/TONs which permitted to continue in the market. b) Applying controls using the quality cost allowed establishing strategies to improve the quality of iron ore, the accepted lots reached to 93.18%, the grade of total Fe raised from 63.11% to 63.81%. Quality costs (prevention and evaluation) increased from USD 3,299 to USD 8,171, while the cost of non-quality (internal and external failure) decreased from USD 43,525 to USD 7,895. c) In the actual conditions this operation is not viable.
