This thesis raises the solution of the problem of calculation of stresses and strains in a continuum medium, expressed in the Electrostatics equation (Poisson equation), using a formulation based on displacement. Initially, concepts of functional analysis will be reviewed, which are involved in the solution of partial differential equations. These concepts will allow to obtain the weak formulation of the Poisson equation. Alter the problem is formulated in its weak form, we proceed with the numerical solution of the problem by approximating the solution as a linear combination of interpolation functions, which are constructed from simple geometric ideas such as Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulation. Finally, the Natural Element Method is formally presented and it is applied to the solution of practical examples of interest in civil engineering by writing small programs in Java, Fortran and C. The results will be compared with the Finite Element Method and other meshless methods.
