This work presents the development of the software GEOSOFT, that allows to carry out static and dynamic non linear analysis of geotechnical structures. The developed software uses the finite elements method for the geometric and numeric modelling of geotechnical structures. The non linear behavior of the materials is simulated by means of the hyperbolic model for the static analysis and by means of the equivalent linear model for the dynamic analysis. Geosoft, designed to be executed in the operating system Windows, allows the interaction user-computer through diverse graphic objects, such as: windows, pull-down menus, scroll bars, grids, buttons, icons, tab strip, among others; allowing that data edition and administration of calculations and results are easy and friendly. As a previous step to the development of the software, the theory on static and dynamic behavior of geotechnical structures is reviewed as well as the geometric and numeric modelling. Also, to have a clear concept of what a software is and of its development phases, a summary of the software engineering is presented. The applicability of the developed software is shown by means of the analysis of three real geotechnical structures: a tailings dam, an earth dam and a spread footing. The obtained results allow to predict the physical behavior of these structures in terms of stresses and strains due to the action of static and dynamic loads.
