Currently in electric fumaces in steel mills worldwide, Sponge lron is used as raw material of good quality in manufacturing high quality steel, because of its purity ( %Fe high) and low residual elements, but because it contains some inherent oxides from its ore, 100% use is conditional, because it requires more energy consumption far complete fusion in the manufacture of steel. With the Carburized Sponge lron there is a higher quality product that has a high impact on the steel making in an electric fumace, allowing to reduce energy consumption, increase productivity and reduce operational costs in making steel. In the direct reduction processes with gas MIOREX and H&L, is made the carburization of sponge iron, in order to increase its carbon content up to 4%. In contrast, in the direct reduction process SL / RN, adopted by the only two steel mills in Perú, is not performed the carburization and the carbon content in the sponge iron is almost zero. In this regard, the steel company Corporación Aceros Arequipa S.A. (CAASA) has implemented an experimental methodology for evidence of carburization of sponge iro with natural gas applied to the Direct Reduction Process SL I RN, with the objective o increasing the carbon content of Sponge Iron. This thesis shows the preliminary carburization tests of iron ore pellets with various solid and liquid fuels, in order to find out if there is some evidence of carbon increase in the product and evaluate the formation of iron carbide or cementite in carburized product. After selecting the natural gas as main fuel, has implemented an experimental method of carburization of sponge iron natural gas, applied to the Direct Reduction process SL I RN with coal, with the aim of increasing the carbon content in sponge iron or DRI We made an experimental design in order to determine the lnfluence of majar parameters to evaluate carburization, such as the reduction temperature, time of carburizing and gas flow introduced. Carburized product evaluation was performed using instrumental chemical analysis and phase analysis by microscopy. Also, carburization tests were conducted in a laboratory kiln and muffle fumace, with the cold DRI obtained from the CAASA Direct Reduction Plant, with the purpose of evaluating a possible increase of carbon in the DRI. Finally, we show the implementation of the first carburization tests with natural gas at industrial level in the direct reduction process SL I RN in Aceros Arequipa Plant aimed at increasing the carbon content in the sponge iron, which is raw material for making steel in Electric Are Fumace
