The aim of this thesis is to study in the slums the relationship between gastrointestinal diseases and various environmental variables such as water quality, socioeconomic factors and prevention cost, We estimated the willingness to pay for improving the access and quality of water in the population studied. Within the framework of the proposed objectives of the thesis, we develop the research in six chapters: In chapter 1 We present the research problem and the reality in Perú and the world is presented in terms of access to water and sewage of the population, also we present the investment requires to improve the levels of quality and access to improved water and sewage in Perú, to the end of the chapter We present the problems and the objectives of the thesis. In chapter 2 We present the theoretical framework which includes the theories related to the problem, we present the theory of human development, concepts and global goals for human development stated by the PNUD, likewise We show the water theory, we mention the water crisis and the concern of the states about water quality and sanitation, and the main diseases caused by poor water and sewage systems, at the end of the chapter We present the Theory of benefits no marginal that support the willingness to pay, also We present the diagrammatic model and theoretical propositions systems, the hypotheses, the operationalization of the variables, and the consistency matrix that relates the various aspects to be reviewed in the thesis. In chapter 3 We present the research methodology which specifies the techniques and tools of research, We define the type of research, the coverage of the study, assumptions of research, survey design and sample size to study, the techniques of analysis and interpretation of data using SPSS for the different variables and data collected in the survey conducted in December 2011 in the slums populations, We analyze the characteristics of the populations surveyed performing statistical tests of the difference in average income. Availability of water, spending on water and mitigation costs, after this we analyze the variables of the populations of Jicamarca and Rinconada independently. In chapter 4 is carried out the analysis and interpretation of results, we analyze the correlation and regression variables and evaluated the hypothesis presented in the theoretical model for the populations of Rinconada and Jicamarca. In chapter 5 we present the issues and considerations related to the theory of willingness to pay for the populations surveyed. Finally we present the conclusions related to the study.
