This paper deals with the reduction in fuel consumption of a rotary furnace which melts lead dust in the refinery DOE RUN PERU, which operates conventional air burner oil and also has a manual temperature control. To achieve this goal, a technical and scientific investigation has been carried out by developing a set of procedures and providing solutions to the problem. The methodology begins mathematically modeling the behavior of the melting process to find the temperature of the lead by establishing a similarity between the heat balance and the theory of conduction in a semi-infinite solid. In this way the theoretical evolution of the temperature is obtained, a fundamental parameter for control. Once the theoretical heating curve of the sample is obtained, the next step is to identify a model with real data from the temperature of the operation of the furnace in order to validate the model. Finally, the necessary elements for the respective control are designed. The results obtained allowed us to confirm the assertion of the most important references mentioned in this thesis that a good control system leads to a reduction in fuel consumption.
