To study the natural hazards it is needed the analysis of the affected society. The hazard takes this feature when a relationship with a vulnerable human group and the infrastructure is on risk. A key of the evaluation of earthquakes effects against housing is the prediction of the vulnerability of the structures. Here, the vulnerability is a damage index which characterizes the degradation on the resistant system would suffer the structure for a given structure type, subject to the action of an earthquake of certain characteristics. In this study a simple methodology based on identifying the dimensions and reinforcement of the walls is proposed, to define dimensional relationships of walls and minimum wall densities for different types of buildings. To compute earthquake response on buildings, test data were taken from walls of different characteristics, to establish a collection of skeleton curves and apply them with the program NONLIN (earthquake response simulation tool development by Virgina Tech - FEMA). A collection of ten Peruvian earthquakes were used and determined cracking and maximum displacement and shear demands. Estimations were made of earthquake shear stress in a building model, according to the existing adobe standard, establishing minimum densities needed for homes and public buildings without reinforcement and with different types of reinforcement, according to its allowable stress This research provides a simple procedure for assessing the vulnerability of buildings, determining the appropriate dimensions of the building, the type of mortar and reinforcement and calculating dimensional relationships of the walls according to the current standard and all density comparing with minimal set.
