The thesis herein, which is explorative rather than experimental, has the objective to identify the factors determining the area of influence in the case of the San Juan de Marcona Port. Due to the relative underdevelopment on the issues covered by the port industry in Peru, referential information about costs and service qualities is not available for some cargoes. In order to develop this thesis, the types of most frequent cargoes to be shipped or unshipped in the area of influence of the San Juan de Marcona Port had to be determined and contrast to the possibility of using other port facilities by contemplating current conditions. The criterion considered here is that the area of influence in terms of ports is restricted when another option, cheaper than some other port or logistic alternative, cannot be provided. A model was created to generate possible combinations and to obtain a sample, which then was used to extract data and elaborate inferences. The cargoes of mineral in bulk and elaborated products with different values were analyzed. The same procedure was applied to the different origins and destinations (great mining areas and important cities of the Southern Macro Region). A route was generated for each distance determined with Software. Such routes, which stressed the quality of the way, also considered the draft of each port as a restricting factor for the size of ships it can take and receive. After checking almost one thousand combinations, some generalities were built and highlighted. After analyzing the modeling results, the conclusions obtained indicated that the area of influence of the San Juan de Marcona Port are the cargo volume (36%), the price of the product (34%), the size of the ship (21%) and the weight factor (9%). Additionally, the development of an experimental thesis is considered as necessary, especially to specify the factors determining the area of influence for consumption cargoes. Finally, it would be important to consolidate a group of undergraduate theses, correlation type, which can analyze individually each one of the found factors but considering the field information in order to validate theoretical statements.
