This study develops a methodology to evaluate the seismic performance and behavior of earth dams in terms of the variability of different design spectra commonly used as part of the state of the practice of seismic design of earth dams in Peru and internationally. The methodology implemented as part of this study is developed in a sequential process, following a procedure by stages and is applied to the particular case of the Yuracmayo earth dam. The methodology used consists of three (3) stages. The first stage considers the seismic demand quantification at the Yuracmayo dam site. For this purpose a probabilistic- deterministic seismic hazard study is carried out and the design spectra for the dam site are defined. The second stage considers the generation of design earthquakes which are compatible with the design spectra previously defined. For this purpose, procedures that work with the modification of individual recorded earthquakes (most widely used procedure in practice) and those that include the selection and combination of sets of recorded earthquakes are considered. As part of the generation of design earthquakes it is also created a database for subduction earthquakes of Peru and Chile. In the third stage it is evaluated the seismic response of the Yuracmayo earth dam for the previously generated design earthquakes. For this purpose, finite difference methods and constitutive models of the state of the art (e.g UBCHYST model (Byrne, 2010)), implemented in the software FLAC (Itasca, 2011) were considered. Finally it is assessed the variability of the seismic response of the Yuracmayo dam in terms of the different considered design spectra and also considering the different design earthquakes generation techniques, beside of that, it is also assessed the performance and behavior of Yuracmayo earth dam for the considered design earthquakes.
