Drilling and Blasting (D and B) system applied to tunnels excavation is being gradually replaced around the world for different types and sizes of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This change occurs due to technical advances, productivity demands and environmental restrictions, and Peru doesn´t keep out of this development. This research is addressed to select the most advantageous excavation system, considering the minimum excavation length in order to justify its applicability. Both “MK 12 TBM” and “D and B” systems were applied and performed in Nº 4 headrace tunnel of Yuncan Hydroelectric Power Project. The “MK 12 TBM” was in operation in the work site from February to December 2001. During this period was recorded all information about its operability and performance variables. The TBM showed high performance in good quality rock, while in soft rock, much time was spent in stabilizing and supporting the rock mass. Experiences have shown that in excavation of long tunnels, “TBMs” tunneling system is more advantageous than “D and B” system. Furthermore, the stability of rock around the excavation is minimum affected because of absent vibrations. Other relevant advantages are also more safety for personnel and equipment, no pollution of blasting and uniform excavation.
