The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the position of the mandibular third molar and the proximity of the roots to the lower dental canal in panoramic radiographs in a university clinic. The research was observational, cross-sectional and retrospective. The sample consisted of 200 third molars. Winter's classification and Langlais radiological signs were used. The results show that 57.5% had a mesioangular position; regarding proximity to the CDI; 28.5% had a dark band pattern. In conclusion, an association was found between the position of the mandibular third molar and the proximity to the CDI, being the mesioangular position the one most associated with the dark band pattern.
