Objective: This research is aimed to understand the beliefs, perceptions and attitudes towards the risk of contracting HIV in adolescents attending at San José Hospital in Callao. Materials and methods: This is a qualitative approach research with a phenomenological design. 15 adolescents were interviewed for this study. The applied technique was the semi-structured interview and the instrument was the interview guide which consists of 10 items grouped into five a priori subcategories proposed by the researchers. Results: The content analysis of the participants allowed the emergence of seven main subcategories: contagion and transmission, protection methods, anxieties and fears, needs for guidance, points of view about people with HIV, sexual and reproductive health and risk attitudes. Conclusions: The investigation allowed to know that adolescents have clear concepts about the contagion and transmission of HIV. In addition, most of the participants recognize the importance of condom use. They expressed anxiety and fear of contagion because most of them have already started their sexual life. They also highlighted the need for guidance and not being influenced by friends. In relation to getting in contact with people with HIV, one group rejects to have contact for fear of becoming infected and another group shows tolerance as they have clear knowledge that they would not be infected through a friendship. Regarding their sexuality, they emphasize the importance of being with only one partner. They finally recognize that having multiple sexual partners is a risk of contracting HIV.
