The problem of water scarcity is a significant challenge for the Peruvian mining industry. Although Peru is a country with a large amount of water resources, the geographical distribution and climatic variability lead to water scarcity in some areas. Mining is a significant part of the Peruvian economy and is the least water consuming activity in the country. Mining requires certain amounts of water for various processes such as extraction, processing, and mineral transformation. This can exert considerable pressure on local water resources, especially in regions already experiencing water scarcity. This research work presents a theoretical framework for understanding the management and storage of mining tailings, optimization and water management, the latest technologies in mining-metallurgical equipment, and economic concepts for the evaluation and comparison of alternatives. It also details the technologies used by some Peruvian mining companies to optimize water recovery in the handling and disposal of their tailings. The implemented equipment of each company will be described and compared in technical and economic aspects, with the aim of analyzing and selecting the one that generates the best performance, efficiency, and lower capital and operating costs. As a conclusion of these evaluations, It is determined that the thickener has lower CAPEX, but higher OPEX, and higher VAN than the filter press, but lower than the band filter. Finally, about the selected alternative, the impact it generated when implemented in the mining unit where is installed will be detailed.
