Through an analysis of foreign direct investment and trade figures between China and Costa Rica and Panama, this research concludes that China has been the greatest beneficiary after the establishment of diplomatic relations with both countries. This positive result for China stems from the fact that it has not only gained strategic allies in the region, but also has a favorable trade balance with Costa Rica and Panama, respectively. However, it should be noted that Chinese foreign direct investment in these countries has not been significant after the establishment of diplomatic relations. The importance of this study lies in providing Latin American policy makers and government officials with information on China's main economic, commercial and diplomatic strategies in the region. This study also provides some recommendations to recipient states on how to be assertive in their commercial economic relationship with China.
