The objective of this study was to measure pre and post-surgical glucose levels in bitches subjected to ovariohisterecmia in the Surgery Room of Small Animals of the Ricardo Palma University and a private veterinary clinic. Twenty-five canine female patients were evaluated, who underwent surgery between August 2017 and December 2017, at which glucose was evaluated in two stages of surgery with a glucometer for human use, according to the two groups of surgeons. The results were analyzed through the SPSS and Microsoft Excel programs. When evaluating the glucose measurements of both the private veterinarian and the student, the following was observed: in Stage I (pre-surgical), 94% were normal and 6% were hyperglycemic, in Stage II (after surgery) 12% it was normal compared to 88% who presented hyperglycemia. In the patients operated on by the students, 86% presented normal and 14% with hyperglycemia in Stage I (pre-surgical), while in Stage II (post-surgical) 100% presented hyperglycemia. In relation to the surgery time, we have an average of 110 minutes of surgery for the students and 34.5 minutes for the private veterinarian. The results according to the surgical ASA did not show significance. The presence of postsurgical hyperglycemia was confirmed in the majority of the patients under study, recommending a more thorough monitoring of vital signs in the different surgical procedures and ASA classifications, using the different monitoring records, in addition there was verified that it performs supreme importance the experience of the surgeon to shorten the time of surgery and to minimize the risks of this one.
