The oldest commercial typology that exists in Peru are the food markets, since their beginnings as squares they have housed and have formed a large meeting space that allows social relations between traders and consumers, as well as a variety of activities among people close to this environment. This essay seeks to recognize the characteristics of the architectural typologies of food markets built in the city of Ica in the second half of the 20th century in order to understand their development and impact on Ica's society. At present, 8 buildings of this type can be seen, most of them being retail markets. For the development of the research, the market projects that have been built in response to the natural phenomena, floods, that affected the city of Ica in 1963 and 1998, are taken into account. For this reason, three supply markets located in the downtown area of the city are evaluated: La Palma market (1970), Modelo market (1972) and Arenales market (2000). These markets, after their construction, have withstood the earthquake that occurred in the city in 2007 and are currently active, due to the sanitary emergency caused by covid-19. In this sense, it is considered important to analyze them in order to understand the roles they have played, play and will play, architecturally, urban and socially.
