The main objective of this research was to explore the relationship between parenting styles such as parental conditional regard (PCR) and autonomy support, basic psychological need (BPN) satisfaction and frustration, and the development of agentic engagement in 234 university students in their late adolescence. Moreover, the present study also examined the psychometric properties of the instruments used, showing adequate evidences of validity and reliability. Additionally, the adequacy of a model for individual parent scores for the PCR scale was tested, and the Enlarged Student Agentic Engagement Scale received a Spanish translation. The results found that PCR was negatively associated with autonomy support. In general, dimensions of PCR were negatively associated with BPN satisfaction and positively with BPN frustration, while autonomy support was positively associated with BPN satisfaction and negatively with BPN frustration. Agentic engagement was positively associated with BPN satisfaction and negatively with BPN frustration. Furthermore, stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that parental conditional negative regard negatively predicted BPN satisfaction and positively predicted BPN frustration, while autonomy support positively predicted BPN satisfaction and negatively predicted BPN frustration. Results are discussed within the framework of self-determination theory and parenting styles.
