This research is a prosopography of the clergy in charge of parishes mainly populated by Indian people in the diocese of Arequipa in the time of Peruvian independence. This study comprises the period that begins on the legitimacy crisis of Spanish monarchy in 1808 to the end of the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation in 1840. The analysis of collective biographical data extracted from a 200-priest group (concerning social origin, legitimacy, ethnicity, native languages) and their cultural environment (education, meritocracy and community life) let arise the cura de indios’ average profile including the requirements, conditions, restraints and possibilities of that ecclesiastical career. The political culture of this parish clergy was severely but progressively transformed during these critical years when they were confronted by incontrovertible military and political facts that defied its convictions, security and stability. Through several phases of adaptation, this clergy turns permeable to Liberalism, Constitutionalism y Modern State principles and rules.
