This research analyzes the representation of female characters in Western theater as a tool for denouncing the sexist social practices of European society towards the end of the 19th century. The aim is to identify that, through the dialogues and links of the female characters of Henrik Ibsen, Antón Chejov and August Strindberg, realistic western authors of that time, they exposed gender inequalities on the part of men both inside and outside the home. Therefore, a questioning is established about the impossibility of women to develop in a professional, personal and political sphere within a patriarchal system; that forced her to stay at home serving her family. This work initially develops the explanation about the patriarchal context and behavior of European society towards women in the late nineteenth century. Subsequently, the relationship of this explanation is developed along with the representations of the female characters of the realistic authors of that time and then the dramatic impact of the family ties of women within the home is analyzed. To do this, a search was made of old and recent publications. In addition, the philosophical thoughts of Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Nietzsche were taken into account to address concepts of art and society. On the other hand, the author Sue Case, Sara Velasco, Jorge Dubatti and other authors, have been essential for this project
