Scopus y Web of Science.
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized mainly by fear of abandonment, emotional inestability and conflicts in interpersonal relationships. Attachment theory could explain this disorder, because it studies patterns of behavior in interpersonal relationships and mental representations, which are part of personality development. The narrative reviews published about the relationship between BPD and adult attachment present little empirical evidence and are from many years ago, so it is necessary to review current empirical studies. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between BPD and adult attachment styles through a review of studies published during the last twenty years (2001-2021). For this purpose, an electronic literature search was conducted in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Inclusion criteria were considered as the use of an instrument that measures adult attachment; that the sources are empirical and the sample presents symptomatology or diagnosis of BPD. Thus, thirteen studies from Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and Australia were reviewed with samples with an age range from 18 to 65 years old. Critical analysis was made. In conclusion, people with BPD show a tendency towards preoccupied and fearful attachment styles, and may have suffered childhood maltreatment. In addition, it was found that the relationship between BPD and attachment is mediated by emotional dysregulation, low personal agency and reflective functions, sensitivity to rejection, negative affects and negative self beliefs, and that in early adulthood more disorganized patterns are presented. Longitudinal studies are recommended.
