This qualitative research examines the contribution of communication to the perceptions of older adults and municipal officials about traditional knowledge, within the implementation of “Saberes Productivos“ (Productive Knowledge) strategy, in the andean community of Andamarca (district of Carmen Salcedo, Ayacucho), between august and october in 2019. Despite of aging population, old age has been overshadowed by the standards of staying young, strong and up-to-date with new knowledge. But the Peruvian State launched the social program “Pension 65“ not only to relieve extreme poverty of the elderly in rural areas, but also to propose municipalities to include the participation of older adults in “Saberes Productivos“, a strategy to revitalize their traditional knowledge for their social recognition. This study aims to analyze the contribution of communication to the perceptions of Pensión 65 users and municipal officials about traditional knowledge, using the theoretical approaches of strategic, intercultural and intergenerational communication. We applied semi-structured interviews and participant observation in the activities of Saberes Productivos and the local Comprehensive Care Center for the Elderly (CIAM). In conclusion, communication contributes to the participation of older adults in the appropriation of their traditional knowledge for its socialization and diffusion, but is limited for the attention to other problems they have in common. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the meaning of “productive“ knowledge to multiple dimensions of life. Other factors that limit their participation are the predominant use of Spanish by municipal officials and the insufficient information by older adults about the strategy.
