Apoya”, “Trabajador”, “Enseña-da consejos”, Da amor-cariño”, “Son estudiosos” y
Recycling is an activity that in recent years has received special attention for its environmental benefits, however, little attention has been given to the people who carry out this work, the recyclers, who work day by day in the marginality. This research proposes to identify the emic structure, from the perspective of the actors, of the goals and values of a group of associated waste pickers from Lima and Callao. 30 structured interviews were conducted with an open response alternative, using an adaptation of the In-Depth Interview Protocol of Emic Components of Well-being (ECB). The most frequent goal categories were “Work tools“, “Health“, “Work“, “Food“, “House or rent to live“, “Family“, “Education for children“, “Support of the municipality“ and “Work quietly”. And the most frequent value categories were “Give help-support“, “Hardworking“, “Teach-give advice“, “Give love-affection“, “Studious“ and “Fight for waste pickers’ concerns“. The presence of goals are predominantly linked to the need for survival. Values also appear linked to survival, through material, affective and information exchange. The results highlight the importance of the creation and / or strengthening of civil, business and non-governmental organizations that strengthen state action to improve the quality of life of this population.
