Socio-environmental conflicts around large-scale mining projects represent a situation that requires special attention, since in some cases they generate project stoppages, where the lack of conflict management and prevention and the failure to create spaces for dialogue directly affect the development of mining projects in our country. However, there are also cases where mining projects are developed in a sustainable manner. Therefore, in this research work we will analyze two cases of large-scale mining projects in the Arequipa region, where we will observe on the one hand, the case of Cerro Verde, where the role of corporate governance is a key tool for the proper implementation of mechanisms for citizen participation, which contributes to the development of the project; and on the other hand, the case of Tia Maria, a case where the implementation of citizen participation mechanisms is not done from a corporate governance approach and therefore the project has been paralyzed due to social issues. This in order to show the importance of implementing citizen participation mechanisms with a corporate governance approach in order to achieve sustainable Key words: Socio-environmental conflicts, corporate governance, sustainable development, citizen participation mechanisms, large-scale mining, sustainable development of mining projects, where corporate governance contributes to strategies that improve social viability and therefore the implementation of mining projects.
