This Educational Innovation Project seeks to justify the importance of the articulation of the competencies “creates projects from artistic languages“ and “critically appreciates artistic and cultural manifestations“ in the music sessions in the secondary school curriculum design of an educational institution in metropolitan Lima and to create a proposal to solve the imbalance in the development of both competencies. This problem responds to a curricular analysis in the music course of the I.E. which prioritizes the development of the competence “creates projects from artistic languages“, giving more hours and sessions to musical execution, neglecting the competence “critically appreciates artistic and cultural manifestations“. It also responds to the result of interviews with the high school teacher and the area coordinator, where we sought to contextualize the music course and the institutional approach, shortcomings in the curricular design and possible solutions to them. Likewise, for this Innovation Project it is important to take into account that music appreciation is a fundamental part of music education and complements instrumental practice. Understanding these two pillars in music education will help to find the right strategies for teaching music that will benefit the integral education of the student, in addition to creating greater variety in the presentation of products that do not necessarily require instrumental performance without neglecting institutional requirements. Thus, the contribution of the following innovation project is to present a curricular design for the music course that articulates both competencies in each session and that are related to each other. Additionally, a variety of products are presented for the development of musical appreciation that will help the student to demonstrate other skills pertaining to the music course.
