The objective of this research is to analyze how fifth year high school students understand the notion of exponential function based on the Theory of Semiotic Representation Records when performing a sequence of activities. The students are 16 to 17 years old and are part of the International Baccalaureate Program of a private institution in Lima-Peru. To achieve this purpose, some aspects of the Theory of Semiotic Representation Registers (TRRS) have been used; taking into account the natural language, algebraic and graphic registers. In addition, the configuration of the Dynamic Graphic Register (DGR) allows us to recognize the development of apprehensions. The methodology applied is qualitative and the method used is Didactic Engineering. In relation to the experimental part, we have selected four students grouped in two pairs, who develop two activities; the first one in relation to the recognition of the exponential function f(x) = A . bx together with characteristics of the domain and range, the second one in relation to the monotonicity of this function. These activities begin with the use of GeoGebra Online to improve the understanding of certain characteristics of the mathematical object and end in the use of pencil and paper to solve extra-mathematical problems that allow to evidence the understanding of what was seen in the first activity. Finally, the results showed that the students manage to perform transformations of the representations in different semiotic registers together with the development of apprehensions, which meant the understanding of the notion of exponential function.
